Welcome to the Public Service Department: Homepage and News!
December 4th, 2008
This is the last post for 2008! Huh? Seems early right? I'll be taking off for New Jersey in one week, and so I relinquish my position as Public Service Director to the capable and beautiful Elaine Brow, who will step up in January of 2009. I'll leave you with some PSA's, curteousy DJ Dia, and bid you adieu, and warn you that the site won't be updated until February, most likely. Next semester I'll serve as the Volunteer Coordinator, so if you happen to go through DJ training, maybe I'll see you around!
-Chris

The Music and Dance of Brazil: a lecture and demonstration at the Claremont Colleges
Village Venture: a Halloween celebration in Claremont
20th Century and Beyond: A Violinist and Pianist perform at the Claremont Colleges.
A special thanks to everyone who made the Breast Cancer Awareness show possible. Be sure to tune into Tim's show every Tuesday from 10am until noon for jazz singers, standards, and straight-ahead!
October 16th, 2008:
Elaine is busy now, typing another grand-ole PSA, while I'm fixing the formatting around the website to satisfy my obsessive-compulsive fancies... please enjoy this new PSA in the meantime: the Scripps Global Media Lecture series on Community Media.
October 9th, 2008:
This is big news. I have finally updated the Find a PSA page. This website now contains all of the event-oriented Public Service Announcements. I couldn't have accomplished this without the help of Dia and Elaine, my trustee volunteers, who did my actual work of writing PSA's while I was editing the website. Please go to the page to check out all our brand new PSA's.
In other news, the Breast Cancer Awareness edition of Jazz with Tim is fast approaching. Please mark your calendars: Tim's show airs October 21st at 10am. Look for upcoming advertisement in the Claremont Courier . The most recently updated collection of interviews and soundbites are available on the Projects page.
September 25, 2008:
Thanks to Elaine for putting together some PSA's on the Global Media series at Scripps and the LA Freewaves event.September 18, 2008:
I'd like to give a warm and hearty welcome to Dia and Elaine who have formally signed onto the Public Service Department volunteer staff this semester! We're going to get a lot of work done with the help of these wonderful women. Nevertheless, the public service department can always grow s'more, so if you're interested in volunteering an hour a week please write to psa@kspc.org.
September Eleventh, 2008:
Chris Gomes returns as the Public Service Director for the fall of 2008. I am seeking volunteers to help out with the many projects I have planned for this year! Whether you are a student at the Claremont Colleges or a member of the Claremont community, please e-mail me at psa@kspc.org if you are interested in helping out with the department. Browse the website (specifically the Who/What page) for more information about the department. This is where we post new Public Service Announcements plus announcements about the department in general.
Admittedly, before today, I hadn't updated the site since July 24th (as you can tell) so there might be some outdated information about. I'll fix that soon as I can next week during office hours (which by sheer coincidence are the same as last year: Thursdays 1-3pm.)
July 24th
FOUR new PSA's:
Serafemme Queer Women of Color Music Festival - rad three day party with music and more!
Glorious Ceramic Glazes - nuff said.
Yoko Ono's Tree Art - In Pasadena, live native Californian trees with room for visitor's participation.
Street Peace - a march for peace in los angeles!
as usual, more info available on our Find a PSA page.
July Seventeenth
Wow, has it really been almost three weeks since I last updated this site??? Fear not! For I am back! We have two new PSA's thanks to KSPC's "Songs for the Whippersnapper" DJ Dia (Sundays 11-1pm). They are: A Pow Wow in Los Angeles, Read! (brought to you by the Claremont Library). Also, information about new rides to Pasadena from Montclair on Foothill Transit is under the header "New Rides to Pasadena." Check it out on our Find a PSA page.
July the fizzurst
THREE new PSA's: one about the roaring twenties @ the homestead museum, another on the "staff selects" exhibit at the Claremont first street art gallery, and the third concerns a tattoo and body art fest!
6/25/2008
Got plenty of new PSA's up: check out our Find a PSA page to see em!!!
June the Eleventh, 2k8
A big thanks to Dia, our very own "Songs for the Whippersnapper" DJ (Sundays 11am-1pm) for all the help with the PSA's. All of the interesting PSA's, more or less, are from Dia. So if you see one along the lines of: "Fire Breathing Gymnasts Perform For Free In Front Of An Orchestra of 90 Instruments, To Raise Money for Cancer Research" it's probably one of hers, whereas all of the "Have You Made An Appointment With Your Eye Doctor?" are mine. thanks Dia! Check out the new PSA's we've got, including: the Festival on the Green, Walk and Roll for Casa Colina Kids, an E-Waste collection weekend in San Dimas, and Outfest: the longest running gay and lesbian film festival in SoCal (perhaps in a much wider area as well).
see ya soon,
-Chris

FIRST OFF: my e-mail is psa@kspc.org, NOT psd@kspc.org. I had been giving out the wrong address, sorry about that! Well, besides a few new PSA's, including "Menu for the Future," a group discussion about future food options held weekly at the Thoreau Book Store, an upcoming two-day book faire (whose theme is "Where have all the bookstores gone?" and an upcoming performance of the Carmina Burana, there's not much new about the site. But here's a list of What's Fresh in Southern California in Early June in case you want some suggestions for Claremont's Sunday Farmer's Market:
May 28th (Wednesday!)
We've got two new PSA's floating around: Russian Favorites (a concert by the Claremont Symphony Orchestra) and Vexing: Female Voices from East LA Punk, which art gallery is currently on exhibit at the Claremont Museum of art. Read more about 'em here.
MaY 20:
Archived some more PSA's... looking for summer help since I've lost all of my wonderful volunteers! Check out the Who/What page if you'd like to learn more about what volunteers do for the PSA department, and shoot me an e-mail if you're interested! psa@kspc.org, of course.
may 15th:
we've been hard at work all semester but it's finally over!
We were busy thinking up till the last minute! We've finally updated the About Us page to include pictures of our team. Check it out!
MAY EIGHT TWO THOUSAND EIGHT::::
We've got a lot of new PSA's on the air!!! check them out on our PSA page; they include Jim Galucci and the Compulsions, Vegetarin Cooking session, Kids Day in Little Tokyo, a film screening of Thirst, a festival entirely devoted to Guacamole (yes!!), a museum about baseball’s changes in the 60's and 70's, and a performance by "I see Hawks in L.A." Also, be listening to KSPC 88.7fm for a new "Green Series" about maintaining an low-energy household. It's the last one that we'll make in a while! After the summer we'll get more on the air, no need to worry!
May 1st 2008!!!
I've been keeping up with the "Find a PSA" page so if you're looking for PSA information check that page out. We have all of the current and recently-archived "blue" PSA's, which in KSPC jargon means "those PSA's that advertise date-specific events." The non-date specific events will take a little longer to archive, since I'll have to type all them up again! serenity now...
Much more interesting than that however is the fact that we've taken pictures and so this site will soon have more than pure text! make use of that cable modem! party like it's 1999!

One of these days I'll get around to actually updating the useful information this site. I've just discovered Dreamweaver and so for now I'm putting some finishing touches on the layout. I sort of wanted the look to be similar to our PSA bins in the DJ booth, minus the hand-drawn comments/numbers/doodles, but I don't think I'm just there yet. Looks like I'll be updating the site every Thursday so check back on Thursdays for updates (duh).
4/10/08
Just added some stuff to the "Find a PSA" page. Should be complete soon! This page is very much under construction so please have patience. By the end of the month of April everything should be available and from then on I'll be updating the site weekly.
4/4/08:
Is this thing on? Hello out there! The Public Service Department
has breached a new communication medium! I created this website to serve the needs
of a new "green series" that our volunteers are planning. We are going to record some
environmentally conscious announcements and we wanted to have an opportunity to share
all the information that won't fit into a 40 second announcement.
Now that I've gotten to working on the website, I'm realizing the many good services
a web site for the Public Service Department can provide... Heard an announcement on-the-
air and missed some vital information? Search for that number here! Want to find out how
to get your non-profit organization or cultural event publicized on KSPC? You'll find it here.
If my volunteers have taught me anything it's that there are plenty of ideas out there
that I'd never come up with on my own - so feel free to contact me with suggestions about (
or problems with) the site.
Thanks,
Chris
Public Service Director
