Smersh - The Beat From 20,000 Fathoms - RRRecords

Beat studio guru Mike Mangino (Pink Noise, Pop-Tarts) and Chris Shepard (Pop-Tarts) formed Smersh as an experimental big-beat techno/industrial project and began releasing cassettes in 1981. Smersh recorded improvised cuts every Monday night, released countless cassettes on their own label, Atlas King, and were featured on more compilations than you can track down. They never played live, never played the same track more than once. This is Smersh’s last studio venture. An essential.

Crass - Penis Envy - Crass Records

Classic album from everybody's first and favorite super-radical English anarchist punk band. Still relevant today and still converting pent-up suburban teenagers from Gap jeans to animal-friendly spike bracelets. It's where you learned about anarchy and your first boyfriend learned about feminism.

Neil B. Rolnick - Macedonian Air Drumming - Bridge

Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber formed the core of the acid folk band, the Holy Modal Rounders. The Holy Modal Rounders formed in 1961 with the intention to update old-time folk music. The Rounders would often make up new words and new arrangements to classic songs. 1969's Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders is one of the greatest acid folk ablums ever. The opening track "Bird Song" is featured in the film, "Easy Rider". A truly wonderful release. Highly Recommended.

Umze Ven Lobsang Tenzin - Tibetan Buddhism: Shartse College of Ganden Monastery - Bridge

This is very, very good. Otherworldly chants from various monastic rituals. All three tracks feature a tibetan form of throat singing while the thire one features throat singing and ritual percussion. Minimal, grandiose, resonant in many ways, this deserves some serious airplay.

Mississippi John Hurt - Avalon Blues 1928 Okeh Recordings - Okeh/Legacy/Columbia

Like listening to your grandfather. Even as a young man Hurt had the soft reassurance of a man twice his age. And the guitar is incredible. Rhythmic, fluid, rolling, Hurt's style was totally new, and has yet to be bettered. His steady right thumb is the stuff of legend. Simple, elegant, beautiful.

Snakefinger - The Spot 7" - Ralph

WOW!!! A late 70s 45 from the Residents' mysterious and now dead guitarist. This is absolutely Essential!

Luciano Berio/Jacob Druckman/Ilham Mimaroglu - Electronic Music III - Turnabout Vox

The pioneers of 1950's avant-garde electronic music are featured on this collection, an unique sort that greatly influenced, and frequently sampled by, the current generation of electronica djs (check out the recent DJ/Rupture cd). Luciano Berio's "Thema" features a combination of inventive electronics and opera singer (Berio's wife) Cathy Berberian readinga passage from Joyce's Ulysses. Modernism joins the analog space age. Jacob Druckman's "Animus 1" is a fine example of proto-glitch, with playful and unsettling sounds animating his very accomplished experimentation. Turkish-American composer Ilhan Mimaroglu takes over the entire Side 2 with his singularly ingenious "magnetic tape" music (7 short sections and 1 longer piano/electronic piece). This LP, along with other similar volumes, is an important piece of music history.

Nina Hagen - Fearless - CBS

Nina Hagen! Terrific new-wave spacticity from German role showcases new-wave glam, Gala's scrawking (similarly with legit vocal chops), bizarre Klaus Nomi-style arrangements. A precussor to-and definately playable with-the Need, Tracy and the Plastics, Erase Errata, any exuberant spaz you got. Song #1 was a hit of sorts. Album produced by disco king Georgio Moroder in 1983.

The William Hooker Group - Vulnerability 7" - ERL

A great old 7" from free jazz/noise legend William Hooker, featuring Borbetomagus' guitarist Donald Miller and ecstatic jazz guru Masahiko Kono among others. Some of the best stuff I have heard Mr. Hooker Play.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zozobra - Chase the Dragon 7" - Samsara

Zozobra is a group featuring Steve Fisk and Steven Lobdell (aka Steven Wray Lobdell), two talented artists in their own right, playing indie rock on this one sided 45.

Blind Willie Johnson - Dark Was the Night - Legacy

This is some of the deepest most existential music you're liable to hear on record. Willie Johnson was a street preacher/musician who played and sang his religious repertoire with the skill and reckless abandon of the best blues musicians of the day. His transcendent slide has preserved a hallowedspot for him in this genre, but he rises above it. Perfect!

John Cage/Luciano Berio/Ilhan Mimaroglu - Electronic Music - Turnabout

Great stuff...the Berio piece is cool...Cage's FontanaMix is an essential piece of 20th century music and is way ahead of its time...the most wonderful music shows up at replica house sometimes...

Skull Kontrol - DeviateBeyond All Means of Capture - Touch and Go

This is the best rock-and-roll EP ever. Eighteen minutes of rock fury from Monorchid/Circus Lupus/Fury/Los Mordidas frontman/lead pirate Chris Thomson. Dirty, quick, and cheap. Also features a member of the Delta 72. Sounds like a dismembered monkey head flying through space, or like a robot fighting a cobra.
